According to Jung, Part Two of Goethe\u2019s\u00a0Faust\u00a0<\/em>was a link in the\u00a0Aurea Catena<\/em>\u00a0from philosophical alchemy and Gnosticism down to Nietzsche\u2019s\u00a0Zarathustra<\/em>: both works were \u201cmostly unpopular, ambiguous, and dangerous,\u201d constituting a \u201cvoyage of discovery to the other pole of the world.\u201d Yet Jung believed that Nietzsche had not understood himself when he \u201cfell into the mystery and into the unspeakable,\u201d singing its praises to \u201cthe crowd that had been forsaken by all the gods.\u201d In\u00a0Nietzsche\u2019s \u201cThus Spoke Zarathustra\u201d and the Challenge of Transformation<\/em>, Paul Bishop examines the significance for Jung of\u00a0the<\/em>\u00a0great thinker of modernity \u2014 and postmodernity. For if\u00a0Zarathustra<\/em>\u00a0was Nietzsche\u2019s\u00a0Faust<\/em>, Jung saw his own No. 2 personality as corresponding to\u00a0Zarathustra<\/em>. After all, Nietzsche was, like Jung, the son of a clergyman \u2014 and as Jung frequently reminded those attending his legendary seminar on\u00a0Zarathustra<\/em>, \u201cI know what\u00a0that<\/em>\u00a0means\u201d!<\/p>\n

This is the third volume in a series of books, examining key texts in German literature and thought that were, in Jung\u2019s own estimation or by scholarly consent, highly influential on his thinking. The project of\u00a0Jung and the Epic of Transformation<\/em>\u00a0consists of four titles, sequentially arranged to explore great works from a Jungian perspective and in turn to highlight their importance for interpreting\u00a0The Red Book<\/em>.<\/p>\n
