{"id":27463,"date":"2021-10-20T14:11:22","date_gmt":"2021-10-20T13:11:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jungian.directory\/fcxfougk\/?post_type=courses&#038;p=27463"},"modified":"2022-01-05T09:06:53","modified_gmt":"2022-01-05T09:06:53","slug":"race-and-myth-from-the-ratman-to-lacan","status":"publish","type":"courses","link":"https:\/\/jungian.directory\/fcxfougk\/courses\/race-and-myth-from-the-ratman-to-lacan\/","title":{"rendered":"Race and Myth: From the Ratman to Lacan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this <strong>Alliance Master Class<\/strong><i>, <\/i>Dr. Sheldon George will focus on understanding the mythical psychic structures expressed in American race relations.\u00a0 To that end, Dr. George will engage with participants in a close reading and discussion of Freud\u2019s \u201cNotes Upon a Case of Obsessional Neurosis\u201d (\u201cThe Ratman\u201d), Lacan\u2019s response, \u201cThe Neurotic\u2019s Individual Myth,\u201d and reflections from his own <i>Trauma and Race: A Lacanian Study of African American Racial Identity. <\/i>All participants will receive a copy of the relevant readings upon registration.\u00a0In order to provide an\u00a0intimate, stimulating discussion, the group will be\u00a0<b>limited to 10 participants<\/b>\u00a0who can\u00a0directly engage with the author.<\/p>\n<p>The tripartite structure of the oedipal complex has been central to Freudian understandings of the psychoanalytic subject.\u00a0 In the early 1950\u2019s, however, Jacques Lacan introduces a revised reading of the structural relation between father, mother and child by presenting death as a fourth term that determines the subject\u2019s mythic relation to the self and others.\u00a0 By working through a rereading of the case of the Rat Man in his lecture \u201cThe Neurotic\u2019s Individual Myth,\u201d Lacan shows how obsessional neurosis reveals deeper layers of myth that may shape subjectivity even across generations.\u00a0 This seminar will focus on understanding the mythical psychic structures expressed in American race relations.\u00a0 It will investigate how myths about race position racialized individuals within oedipal relations of Eros and aggression that are fundamentally determined by deep psychic relations to the fourth term which Lacan applied to the oedipal dynamic\u2014the factor of death that defines a fundamental relation to subjectivity and alterity.\u00a0 We will work through this reading of the mythic structure of race in America by first returning to Lacan\u2019s lecture and then advancing toward an investigation of race in fiction by the African American author Ralph Ellison.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In this Alliance Master Class, Dr. Sheldon George will focus on understanding the mythical psychic structures expressed in American race relations.\u00a0 To that end, Dr. George will engage with participants in a close reading and discussion of Freud\u2019s \u201cNotes Upon a Case of Obsessional Neurosis\u201d (\u201cThe Ratman\u201d), Lacan\u2019s response, \u201cThe Neurotic\u2019s Individual Myth,\u201d and reflections [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":17,"featured_media":0,"template":"","level_of_course":[984],"class_list":["post-27463","courses","type-courses","status-publish","hentry","level_of_course-continuing-professional-development"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v28.3 (Yoast SEO v28.3) -
