We are fascinated by the process of psychotherapy. Since its inception in 46 AD with the Asclepiads, we have experienced treatment as truly transformative, good enough, or utterly disastrous. The pioneers in the field have sought to understand something of those inherent, archetypal processes which create conditions for healing, occurring within one of the most perplexing and transformative relationships humanity has ever known.<\/p>\n
This therapeutic relationship is inexorably entwined in psyche\u2019s dance, choreographed for the purpose of manifesting archetypal dynamics into matter.\u00a0 Here the archetypes are a living reality, and the findings of the New Sciences on inter-connectivity, and the collapsing of past, present, and future into a single moment and pattern, guide these dynamics. Each expresses the Self’s artistry for the bringing of archetypal dynamics into the material domain.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
It is this expression of Psyche in Matter that moved Teilhard De Chardin to write that “Matter is spirit moving slowly enough to be seen”, and for Jung to state that; “Since psyche and matter are contained in one and the same world\u2026 it is not only possible but fairly probable\u2026that psyche and matter are two different aspects of one and the same thing.\u201d (C. G. Jung CW vol VIII P. 215).<\/p>\n
As we learn of the existence of the Objective Psyche and the presence of autonomous, formative tendencies at work in the unconscious, we can understand that the actual client-therapist relationship serves as the canvas upon which Psyche paints its story. Now, as the archetype begins to literally structure the form evolving between client and therapist, the process and mystery of healing begins.\u00a0<\/p>\n
No longer are these therapeutic enactments viewed as transference or iatrogenic dynamics, but instead, form part of a natural process whereby an archetypal field is activated, bringing\u00a0 both client and therapist into its vortex as a necessary part of healing\u00a0<\/p>\n
Ultimately, however, we must acknowledge that psychotherapy is a mystery, an archetypal and spiritual experience worthy of our attention, dedication, and perhaps even our awe.<\/p>\n
