We\u2019ll use, as an example, my new novel,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jungian.directory\/fcxfougk\/books\/the-alchemy-fire-murder-a-mary-wandwalker-mystery\/\"><em>The Alchemy Fire Murder: A Mary Wandwalker Mystery\u00a0<\/em>(2023)<\/a>. I will show how JABR is a way of\u00a0<em>doing\u00a0<\/em>alchemy that Jung would recognize and will invite responses to how the novel is also\u00a0<em>about\u00a0<\/em>alchemy, addressing the topic of America\u2019s forgotten history with European alchemy in colonial times.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Georgia;\"><em><span style=\"color: #242424;\">The Alchemy Fire Murder<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #242424;\">\u00a0continues the exploration of the marginalized feminine begun in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jungian.directory\/fcxfougk\/books\/the-sacred-well-murders\/\"><em>The Sacred Well Murders\u00a0<\/em>(2022)<\/a>. As a prequel,\u00a0<em>The Alchemy Fire Murder\u00a0<\/em>includes the backstory of the witch, Janet, and relates how Holywell came to be the secret guardian of a medieval alchemy manuscript at nearby Oxford University.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia;\">In the seventeenth century, the\u00a0<em>real\u00a0<\/em>John Winthrop emigrated from London to colonial Massachusetts with a barrel full of alchemy manuscripts. He practiced as an alchemist, dispensed medicines, and became the colony\u2019s governor. In my\u00a0<em>fiction<\/em>, a famous alchemy scroll was stolen from Oxford in 1658 and taken to colonial Connecticut by alchemist and future governor, Francis Andrew Ransome. He fooled the college by leaving a near-perfect copy made by his friend, Robert Le More, who accompanied him to the New World. Only in the twenty-first century would it be revealed that Le More was an African woman, Roberta, the Moor.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia;\"><span><em><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jung.org\/resources\/Pictures\/PROGRAM%20AD\/ROWLAND%20Alchemy%20cover.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"331\" align=\"left\" border=\"0\" \/><\/em><em> The Alchemy Fire Murder: A Mary Wandwalker Mystery<\/em>\u00a0uses the mystery genre to explore what was lost\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 when colonial alchemy got swallowed up. It includes questions of race and gender in the seventeenth century\u00a0\u00a0 and in the twenty-first. The story uses JABR to revision the climate emergency in relation to alchemy\u2019s use of\u00a0\u00a0 fire as a crucial ingredient of transformation<em>.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia;\">Can these inexperienced detectives triumph over corrupt professors and racist attempts to rewrite history? Can they remake their fragile family? Will the extraordinary story of Robert Le More prove a source of hope for today?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Georgia;\"><span>Participants will be encouraged with their own JABR to work through such significant and challenging topics\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #242424;\">as colonialism, climate change, racism, different spiritualities, and the importance of origin stories as collective individuation.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With humor, image work, dialogue and the sharing of creative practice, we will explore how Jungian Arts-Based Research (JABR) does\u00a0therapy with the collective, taking Jungian alchemy into the world.
