In May and October of 1968, Trappist monk and acclaimed spiritual author, Thomas Merton, offered two extended conferences at Our Lady of the Redwoods Abbey, a Cistercian women\u2019s community in Northern California. Comprising over twenty-six hours of previously unpublished material,\u00a0<\/em>Merton\u2019s California conferences\u00a0cover a variety of topics from ecology and consciousness, to yoga and Sufi spirituality. Throughout these engaged and enlivening informal talks, Merton challenges his listeners to ask their own questions about the nature of the self and offers penetrating insights into the complexities of contemporary human being from a monastic and contemplative perspective.<\/p>\n

One of the key themes that Merton \u201ctreats\u201d is the rampant anxiety, alienation, and depression that he diagnoses at the root of \u201cmodern consciousness.\u201d Merton then contrasts the modern, alienated self to medieval and mystical forms of consciousness, rooted in a spiritual or contemplative \u201cGround of Being\u201d \u2013 serving as \u201calternatives\u201d to contemporary forms of consumer consciousness, or what he calls the \u201ccomputer karma\u201d of modern-day Americans. As does Merton, parallels will be drawn to the work of C.G. Jung, particularly to Jung\u2019s notion of individuation, and the modern \u201csearch for soul,\u201d or as Merton frames it, the recovery of one\u2019s \u201ctrue self\u201d and the restoration of the \u201cimage and likeness\u201d of God \u2013 Jung\u2019s archetypal Self.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
