In my chapter in \u201cJung\u2019s Shadow Concept \u2013 Fundamentalism, Terrorism and Mindlessness: The Shadow of Thinking\u201d, I explore the way that all of our patients are exposed to a \u201cpower axis\u201d of relating in early life, and how a \u201clove axis\u201d becomes like an \u201catrophied muscle\u201d which struggles to play its part in life. Patients who come to see us are searching for that muscle without really knowing what they are searching for. They bring the two tools they have been given by their families \u2013 abandonment and impingement \u2013 to analyse us, and to see if we know the secret, and can bring that unknown missing \u201clove\u201d dimension out of the \u201cShadow\u201d and help them to better live their lives.<\/p>\n
In the world, in groups and nations, there is evidence of this same search that we find in the consulting room, but the larger the group, the more the power Axis, marked out by \u201cFundamentalism, Terrorism and Mindlessness\u201d, holds sway, and the harder it is to introduce that elusive \u201clove axis\u201d and indeed \u201cthinking\u201d in the face of powerful group processes.
