What does it mean for a woman to be a Virgin-spiritually and psychologically-one-unto herself?<\/em><\/p>\n

For a woman\u2019s individuation to unfold, the archetypal patterns of the Kore arise as \u201cinner necessity.\u201d Georgia O\u2019Keeffe eschewed the cultural conditioning of her times by following the still small voice of her creative inspirations to become who she was. In Jung\u2019s essay, \u201cThe Psychological Aspects of the Kore\u201d (CW9i para 306), Jung suggests that the Kore archetype could be a\u00a0Supraordinate personality<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0Self<\/em>\u00a0figure for women.<\/p>\n

The Friday evening lecture will examine these ideas and show how O\u2019Keeffe arrived at creating her own painting style. We will consider her initial intent of creating forms that she felt were particular to the psyche of a woman, a definition she quickly abandoned in order not to be seen exclusively as a woman or woman\u2019s painter. We will consider O\u2019Keeffe\u2019s own words and the evolution of her experimental charcoal drawings of 1915 in her effort to paint as a \u201cVirgin\u201d\u2014spiritually and psychologically\u2014\u201cone-unto-herself.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In Saturday\u2019s workshop, \u201cThe Kore Archetype in Women\u2019s Individuation and Creative Process,\u201d we will explore what it means for a woman to become \u201cone-unto-herself\u201d with O\u2019Keeffe\u2019s example in mind. Through writing prompts for reflection and sharing together, we will reflect on the ways the values of the Kore Archetype relate to your own lives, and personal myth. We will view in more depth O\u2019Keeffe\u2019s paintings and explore the nature of creative process and identity development. We will ground these experiences in the body and include time for free play with line, color and form.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
