She introduces the ancient, Christian notion of interiority, from the writings of the 5<sup>th<\/sup>C theologian and philosopher, St Augustine of Hippo, and discuss Jung\u2019s map of the soul as a continuation of this ancient tradition, as modern path of interiority towards self-knowledge and transformation.<\/p>\n<p>In this paper, key Jungian themes relating to transformation of our shadow, the structure and function of symbols of transformation and the path of individuation are explored. Five major symbols of transformation from the 16<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0C Christian mystical text,\u00a0<em>\u2018The Interior Castle\u2019<\/em>\u00a0by St Teresa of Avila \u2013 castle, garden, water, fountains and butterfly \u2013 are discussed, from psychological and spiritual perspectives, and concludes with reflections from Thomas Merton, the 20<sup>th<\/sup>C American theologian and writer, on the mystery of Presence in the centre of our soul.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This talk is a synopsis of some key papers, and themes, from Julienne\u2019s recent book, \u2018The Diamond Heart \u2013 Jungian Psychology and the Christian Mystical Tradition\u2019\u00a0(2023).
