The trickster is a kind of psychological poltergeist, the loose cannon on the deck of the psyche. At\u00a0 the precise moment when we think we have got things under control, the trickster overturns them. Jung identified the\u00a0 mechanism for trickster-related mishaps with the Greek term enantiodromia<\/em>, which we could call a\u00a0 trickster reversal. A trickster reversal is an occurrence that arrives with no warning and produces the\u00a0 opposite result from that intended. <\/span><\/p>\n

Hitler\u2019s chief trickster event was the defeat of his highly trained,\u00a0 combat-ready sixth army at Stalingrad by the ill-equipped, poorly trained Russian army. After Hitler\u2019s \u00a0defeat, Germany became an exemplar of the democracy that Hitler expressed hatred for, and a \u00a0magnet for those whom he viewed as untermenschen <\/em>(subhumans)\u2014immigrants from less developed\u00a0 countries seeking refuge from authoritarian regimes. Whereas Hitler strove for racial purification,\u00a0 postwar Germany became a melting pot of migrant races. <\/span><\/p>\n

Although a trickster reversal may be\u00a0 triggered by a narcissistic inflation as in Hitler\u2019s case, altruists are also subject to trickster reversals.
