This series offers a close and substantial reading of\u00a0The Red Book: Liber Novus<\/em>\u00a0across four two-hour seminars. In each session, participants read the text aloud, situate it within its historical context, and consider relevant intertexts. The seminar addresses the meaning of the text, its personal impact on readers, and its implications for clinical practice. As\u00a0The Red Book<\/em>\u00a0presents much of Jung’s material in visual form, the seminar examines these images in detail and reflects on their significance. Participants are encouraged to use break times and the close of each session for informal conversation with the instructor and with one another. Light refreshments will be provided.<\/p>\n

This session covers Liber Secundus, Chapters 14 (“Divine Folly”) and 15 (“Nox Secunda”). Across this sequence, Jung’s personal transformation continues in the text’s first layer, while a second layer, added a year later, sets out the origins of what became, in his later writings, “the individuation process”\u2014a process driven not by personal ambition but by the recognition that “the divine wants to live with me.” In “Nox Secunda,” Jung recounts his imagined commitment to a madhouse for religious mania, a striking reversal given that his 1912 work Transformations and Symbols of the Libido had itself pathologized religious belief. The seminar will explore how, two years later, the experiences narrated in Liber Novus reflect Jung’s movement from the world of thinking into the world of feeling, and his growing openness to what he had previously rejected\u2014an experience reflected in the chapter titles’ invocation of darkness (Nox\/Night).<\/p>\n
