Jung\u2019s break with Freud brought the first major split in the psychoanalytic movement, and would have profound repercussions, intellectual and emotional, for both of them. Nevertheless, their personalities as well as their philosophical assumptions and orientations were so different that it is their intense six-year collaboration that calls for explanation \u2013 rather than the break that brought it to an end. Focussing on the crucial differences in philosophy, personality and professional experience separating Jung from Freud, we will examine Jung\u2019s criticisms of Freud\u2019s theory of psychoanalysis, and see how these made it necessary for him to develop his own psychological theory and method of psychotherapy. Setting Jung in his historical context, we will explore in detail his unique contribution both to psychology and to the art of therapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Format \u2013<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Session 1:<\/strong> We will explore the philosophical roots of Jung\u2019s psychology, contrasting these with the philosophical roots of Freud\u2019s theories, and examine his criticism of Freud\u2019s version of psychoanalysis during the period of their collaboration, as expressed in \u2018New York Lectures\u2019 from 1911.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Session 2:<\/strong> We will then follow the development of Jung\u2019s original ideas in his first major work, \u2018Symbols of Transformation\u2019 (1913), and see how the new thinking it contains precipitated the break with Freud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Session 3:<\/strong> We will study Jung\u2019s personal \u2018confrontation with the unconscious\u2019 as it unfolded in the years following the break with Freud, and trace the emergence of the principal ideas of his mature psychology from this process. We will examine \u2018Personality Types\u2019 (1920) as the first work containing the main elements of Jung\u2019s final theory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Session 4:<\/strong> We will explore Jung\u2019s later writings on religion and alchemy, and review the principles and methods of Jungian psychotherapy, examining the distinctive Jungian approach to dreams, the practice of active imagination, and the use of art, imagery, sand-play and movement in psychotherapy.
