This paper investigates the relations between home and homelessness, as categories describing our inner psychic states and affective relation to the world around us. The answer to the question of what contributes to \u201cfeeling at home\u201d and belonging to a place is complex and needs and contributions from a range of different disciplinary fields. In the terms of psychoanalysis and analytical psychology, home and homelessness can be understood not as discrete categories but as points on a continuum of integration of psychic inner parts and affective relation\/non-relation with outer material elements of the surrounding environment and with others.<\/p>\n
My work experience with refugees suggests reflections on the way in which we live in a matrix of conscious and unconscious links between inner and outer worlds that need deeper and simultaneous consideration to understand their implications and mutual resonances for the psyche. A different degree of homelessness will be considered in relation to the organisation of the self, from a vague sense of disorientation to a very deep change within the self which induce the sense of impossibility of feeling at home in the world after catastrophic trauma. Clinical cases and vignettes may illustrate some aspects of these interconnections.<\/p>\n
