Only in our creative acts do we step forth into the light and see ourselves whole and complete. Never shall we put any face on the world other than our own, and we have to do this precisely in order to find ourselves. For higher than science or art as an end itself stands man, the creator of his instruments. (CW 8, para. 737)<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Carl Jung thought<\/span> that<\/span> the rich, numinous inner<\/span>–<\/span>world of the unconscious and the more <\/span>scientific, rational world of consciousness were bound inextricably together.<\/span> Echoing<\/span> this <\/span>insight, t<\/span>he creative work of individuation<\/span> challenges<\/span> us to understand the myriad ways in <\/span>which we<\/span> u<\/span>nconsciously<\/span> reshape the<\/span> external<\/span> psychological world<\/span> into replicas of<\/span> o<\/span>ur<\/span> inner <\/span>unconscious selves<\/span>. While such topographic distortion<\/span>s<\/span> are<\/span> an<\/span> inevitable<\/span> part of life<\/span>, Jung also <\/span>exhorts us to become increasingly aware of the relationship<\/span> that<\/span> exists<\/span> betwee<\/span>n<\/span> the<\/span> inn<\/span>er and <\/span>outer worlds<\/span> themselves<\/span>. In so doing, we come to understand and embody these complexities. <\/span>Of course<\/span>,<\/span> this is not an easy task<\/span>. T<\/span>o<\/span> achieve such insight requires personal perspicacity<\/span> and <\/span>considerable effort<\/span>. As he comments:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Under no<\/span> circumstances should one indulge in the unscientific delusion that one<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s own <\/span><\/span>subjective prejudice represents a universal and f<\/span>undamental psychological truth.<\/span> No <\/span><\/span>true science can spring from this, only a faith whose shadow is intolerance and <\/span><\/span>fanaticism. Con<\/span>tradictory views are necessary for the evolution of any science; they <\/span><\/span>must not be set up in opposition to each other, but should seek the earliest possible <\/span><\/span>synthesis. (<\/span>CW<\/span> 18<\/span>, para.<\/span> 1774)<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

This is an important warning for us globally. We live at a time<\/span> when<\/span> intolerance and fanaticism <\/span>are on the rise. It is a period of global instability bot<\/span>h politically and ecologically.<\/span> Art, science, <\/span>and numinosity<\/span> all have the capacity to<\/span> illuminate or darken<\/span>. Sometimes it feels almost <\/span>impossible to live with such pres<\/span>sures; outside of our personal control, they n<\/span>onetheless bear <\/span>down on us. Yet<\/span> Jung, rather more reassuringly notes, \u201cIn all chaos there is a cosmos,<\/span> in all <\/span>disorder a secret order\u201d (<\/span>CW<\/span> 9i, para. 66).<\/span> How then are we to discover this secret order<\/span> that is <\/span>so<\/span> well<\/span> hidden in the cultural chaos of daily life? <\/span><\/span>Jung finds the answer in our creative spirit<\/span>\u2014<\/span>in psyche.<\/span> Creativity, in its broadest sense, spans <\/span>the arts and sciences. Creative insights in science are crucial. Equally, the arts have always <\/span>relied on the<\/span> sciences, never more so than in our digital age. In an<\/span> enantiodromaic<\/span> move, we <\/span>can<\/span> see these two orientations as entangled and not as separate worldviews.<\/span><\/span>

stands man, the creator of his instruments.<\/span> (<\/span>CW<\/span> 8,<\/span> para. 737) <\/span><\/span>It is<\/span> significant<\/span> that J<\/span>ung dra<\/span>ws on nature, habit, prejudice<\/span>,<\/span> and<\/span> population<\/span> as factors in <\/span>cons<\/span>idering<\/span> human<\/span> psychology.<\/span> What he appears to<\/span> suggest is the primacy of human nature in <\/span>the process of individuation<\/span>\u2014<\/span>an idea<\/span> that<\/span> has recently come under some challenge from eco<\/span>–<\/span>psychology\u2019s<\/span> exhortation to be more fully in relatio<\/span>nship with the non<\/span>–<\/span>human world.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Per<\/span>haps a <\/span>consideration of the following questions might elicit a way fo<\/span>r<\/span>ward<\/span>:<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> What does a psychological perspective illumi<\/span>nate about<\/span> o<\/span>ur current cultural<\/span> and <\/span>scientific<\/span> problems?<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> How can we creatively<\/span> hold<\/span> cultural<\/span> and scientific<\/span> tensions?<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> How do<\/span> scientific<\/span> and cultural engagemen<\/span>ts assist to<\/span> rais<\/span>e<\/span> consciousness?<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> How do<\/span> the archet<\/span>ypal and<\/span> the<\/span> numinous help in<\/span> understanding our social and scientific<\/span>
condition<\/span>? <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The theme of this year<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s conference is an implicit<\/span> call to<\/span> reflect on<\/span> the role of science<\/span>, art<\/span>,<\/span> and <\/span>spirituality<\/span>,<\/span> across and between a<\/span>n array<\/span> of disciplines<\/span>.<\/span> The conference i<\/span>n<\/span> its<\/span> scholarly <\/span>engagement<\/span> and artistic practice, th<\/span>r<\/span>ough the energy of d<\/span>ialogue\/dialectic (not debate)<\/span> and the<\/span>
thoughtfulness<\/span> of meditative reflection, provides a space to hold and understand the<\/span> diverse <\/span>creative<\/span> energies in our live<\/span>s and<\/span> cultures.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
