My presentation is about the specific transference phenomena between psychotherapy\/analysis and supervision that are called parallel processes. Although having worked with these daily, up to now only descriptive terms have been available for what we could experience, observe and use in our work and discourse, but for which we lacked any real explanation. Beginning with animal behaviour and human extrasensory communication, I shall use aspects of leading-edge research in quantum physics and neurobiology to provide parallel process phenomena for the very first time with a scientific basis that only now has become possible. I shall trace the history of the use of these dynamics from Freud’s early recommendations, via Gross’s and Jung’s work on mutuality and synchronicity, to the initial descriptions of parallel processes by Searles and others some fifty years ago, and Doehrman’s seminal dissertation on the subject in the early ’70s. I shall conclude with clinical vignettes of present-day use in psychodynamic one-to-one and group supervision.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
