‘Paul Bishop, Ph.D., is a Jungian scholar, professor, and writer living and working in Glasgow, Scotland. <\/p>\n
He is a graduate of the College of St. Mary Magdalen at the University of Oxford and was a scholar at the German Literature Archive in Marbach before entering the doctoral program at Oxford\u2019s Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages. He was awarded the Lady Julia Henry Fellowship at Harvard University and spent a year as an Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung Fellow at Marbach. He graduated with a Ph.D. from Oxford in 1994 with the dissertation, \u201cC.G. Jung\u2019s Reception of Friedrich Nietzsche,\u201d later published as the book, The Dionysian Self (De Gruyter, 1995).<\/p>\n
For twelve years, Dr. Bishop held the position of Professor of German at the University of Glasgow, and in 2013 was named the William Jacks Chair in Modern Languages at their School of Modern Languages and Cultures, where he currently serves as an Honorary Professorial Research Fellow.<\/p>\n
His most recent books include Discourses of Philology and Theology in Nietzsche, and Nietzsche\u2019s Writing Against Religion and the Crisis of Faith. He has contributed chapters to such recent publications as, Ideas and Influences on Eranos, Self-Optimization in Modernist Culture, and Where Is Soul? Psychology in Modernity.<\/p>\n
Professor Bishop has joined us on four previous editions of the podcast, including Episode 131 on is book Reading Plato through Jung, and Episode 141 on Jung\u2019s essay on flying saucers. He also joined us for Episode 135 on Volume 1 of his series, Jung and the Epic of Transformation, Wolfram von Eschenbach\u2019s \u201cParzival\u201d and the Grail as Transformation, and for Episode 152 on Volume 2, Goethe\u2019s \u201cFaust\u201d as a Text of Transformation. <\/p>\n
He returns to us today to discuss Volume 3, Nietzsche\u2019s \u201cThus Spoke Zarathustra\u201d and the Challenge of Transformation, released last week by Chiron Publications. The fourth and final volume, a study of Jung\u2019s Red Book, is due next year.<\/p>\n
