Robert Bly, who has died aged 94, was an award-winning poet, author and translator, whose name was made by his bestseller Iron John: A Book About Men (1990), which was credited with advancing the men\u2019s movement in the United States.<\/p>\n

Bly believed that American \u201cmaledom\u201d had gone soft in increasingly feminist times, with fathers failing to haul up their sons into a state of suitable masculinity, and with men\u2019s self-worth much diminished. He applied Jungian psychology to analysing the Grimms\u2019 fairy tale Iron John, about a prince who is ushered into adulthood by the wild, iron-skinned man of the title.<\/p>\n

The problem with men, according to Bly, went back to the Industrial Revolution, which had removed them from the family home and confined them largely to the workplace. They needed to rediscover primal male forces and develop a way of being male that did not hark back to outdated models.<\/p>\n

Reviewing Iron John in The Washington Post, the linguistics scholar Deborah Tannen wrote that Bly had struck a chord, revealing \u201cthe need for ritual and for new stories and images to replace the ones that have worn out and let us down, the alienation of father and son in post-industrial society.\u201d<\/p>\n

His book \u2013 which spent 62 weeks on The New York Times\u2019s bestseller list \u2013 spawned a movement of men-only weekend retreats in the forest, with much poetry, dancing, drumming and hugging. Many feminists were unimpressed, but Bly continued to spread his gospel in The Sibling Society (1996), which described a generation turned into perpetual adolescents by a diet of rock music, violent films, computer games and trashy television.<\/p>\n

He was optimistic, though, placing his hope in \u201cyounger men who are determined to be better fathers than their own fathers were\u201d.<\/p>\n

Robert Elwood Bly was born on December 23 1926 on his family\u2019s farm near Madison, Minnesota, to parents of Norwegian ancestry. His hard-working father was an alcoholic, while his mother, he wrote in Iron John, was emotionally damaged. He later admitted that he blamed her for the \u201cnegative view\u201d he had of his father.<\/p>\n

He decided to become a poet in his childhood after reading W B Yeats: \u201cI recognised that a single short poem has room for history, music, psychology, religious thought, mood, occult speculation, character and events of one\u2019s own life.\u201d (He said in another interview that he began writing poetry to impress a beautiful teacher at high school.)<\/p>\n

Bly spent two years in the US Navy, then graduated from Harvard in 1950. He had a brief spell in New York, taking menial jobs and sometimes sleeping at Grand Central Station, then spent two years gaining a Master\u2019s at the Writers\u2019 Workshop, University of Iowa, where Robert Lowell and John Berryman were on the teaching roster.<\/p>\n

Following a Fulbright-funded trip to Norway he would become known for translations of such Scandinavian writers as Knut Hamsun and Tomas Transtr\u00f6mer, as well as others like Pablo Neruda and Federico Garc\u00eda Lorca.<\/p>\n

Back in the US \u2013 he spent most of the rest of his life in Minnesota \u2013 he founded a literary magazine, The Fifties. Changing its name with each decade, he intended it \u201cto cause trouble\u201d. His debut poetry collection, Silence in the Snowy Fields, appeared in 1962.<\/p>\n

As the decade progressed he became a vigorous activist, co-founding American Writers Against the Vietnam War, and in 1968 he donated his National Book Award prize money of $1,000 for The Light Around the Body to the draft resistance movement.<\/p>\n

More than 50 poetry collections followed, many exploring myths and spirituality. His anti-war instincts remained as fierce as ever, and in 2004 he published The Insanity of Empire: A Book of Poems Against the War in Iraq.<\/p>\n

Robert Bly married, in 1955, the author Carol McLean. They had a son and three daughters, one of whom, Mary, is a romantic novelist writing as Eloisa James. The marriage was dissolved in 1979, and Carol Bly died in 2007. In 1980 Bly married a Jungian therapist, Ruth Ray, who survives him with a stepdaughter and the children of his first marriage; a stepson predeceased him.<\/p>\n
