In this course, Kay Tobler Liss will present a three-part program based on her recent novel “The Last Resort.” The novel’s main theme explores our connection to nature and a secondary theme concerns social and environmental justice for a Native American tribe. The story traces the journey of a Manhattan lawyer seeking a different life who ends up living near the ocean where he meets a Native American woman who becomes his spiritual guide.
Topics to be discussed include: the mythic hero’s journey; the four ancient elements as actual characters and symbols of transformation; the power of dreams to aid in self-actualization; active imagination through writing; Native American wisdom versus Christian beliefs; and how the philosophies of Fredrick Nietzsche, Martin Heidegger, Thomas Berry, and Henry David Thoreau are woven into the story to reflect the hero’s path of individuation and integration.
The three sessions will be divided into the beginning, middle, and end of the novel, roughly 60 pages each covering the 180 pages.
