Mildred Harris – What Have You Done with the Garden?

We live in a time of destructive estrangement. We assault Nature even as our knowledge about the devastation we have caused broadens. We disregard our interconnectedness with all life, trampling all living forms and contaminating the essential elements of water, soil, and air. The crisis in the biosphere is fundamentally psychological and spiritual – individual and collective. We fear, despair, deny, grieve. We experience the dark night of the soul, not knowing how to connect with the creative, the imaginal. Yet, the story by which we live is not static: Psyche is dynamic, fluid, and emergent. A new story struggles to be born, one in which we strive for wholeness and a transformed understanding of our deep relatedness with Planet Gaia. In the dance between the paradoxical energies of creativity and destructiveness, light and dark, union and separation, we pursue hope with confidence in the human capacity to grow, to become more conscious and conscientious. Throughout this talk we explore the relevance of Jungian thought and practice in our era, consider symbolic processes as presented through dreams, and explore an indigenous tale of the land on which we live, a story that depicts creation and destruction, destruction and creation. We consider the dominant cultural complexes which have shaped our society’s development and contemporary stance; finding a way forward requires an understanding of where we have been and are currently. We imagine an Earth ethic, valuing “the kinship of all things, ” as did Jung.
