Two drives contend within each of us, the desire for satiety and safety, and the drive for exploration and individuation. When the former prevails over the latter, the individual is diminished and the world impoverished. Yet, the need to leave home, psychologically, is also an open wound that one carries into all one’s doings. This push/pull will be examined and the costs of either course illustrated through the lens of analytic psychology.
