The Crone is often portrayed as an old, disagreeable, malicious and sinister woman. She is also said to have magical or supernatural powers. The Crone Archetype is one aspect of the feminine face of God. The word “Crone” is derived from the word “Crown,” or “Corona,” which is the light around the face and body, the aura, which signifies enhanced clarity and insight. Another name given to old women is “Hag,” which derives from “Hagia Sophia,” meaning “Divine Wisdom.”
In native cultures, the feminine face of God is associated with the phases of the moon. The New Moon correlates with the Maiden Archetype, the Waxing Moon with the Warrior Archetype, the Full Moon with the Mother Archetype, and the Waning Moon with the Crone Archetype.
In this session of Jung After Work, we will take a fresh look at the Crone to hopefully move her from the dark “Witch” image and closer to the “Old Wise Woman.”
