Jungian scholar Dr. Robert H. Langan | Jung and Spinoza | Speaking of Jung #163

‘Robert H. Langan, Ph.D, is a Jungian scholar and author living and working in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey.

He holds a Master of Arts with Distinction in Jung and Post-Jungian Studies from the University of Essex in England, earning the David Holt Award for best academic performance in course. He studied the history of psychology, key concepts of Jung, philosophy and psychology, and graduated with a dissertation entitled “Jung and Spinoza: Archetypes Relocated.”

Under the supervision of Professor Roderick Main, Ph.D. (Episode 117), he continued at the University of Essex and earned a doctorate in Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies. His thesis, “Jung and Spinoza: Passage Through the Blessed Self,” which presents the first major study of Jung’s rather curious relationship with the philosophy of Baruch Spinoza, was published last year by Routledge (https://amzn.to/4bm15g9).

Dr. Langan specializes in speculative metaphysics and psychological types, and posts on Substack under the name Wrath Mania along with Cassie Fielding and Gabriela Sova Spulirova. Their blog, Univocity Drift: Complex Psychology After Jung, includes Dr. Langan’s posts “Kill the Archetype!” (parts one and two), and “Disclosure Dud” (a review of the Steven Spielberg film Disclosure Day).

He is a regular guest on SEREPTIE’s podcasts Acid Horizon and LEPHT HAND. Last week he joined SEREPTIE and Deleuzian scholar Jay Conway for an exclusive episode of Acid Horizon entitled The Philosophy of Heat. He later had a fascinating discussion with SEREPTIE for his solo-podcast, LEPHT HAND, entitled Scandal, Shadow, and the Underworld: Where the Symbolic Meets the Political.

Later this month Dr. Langan will be presenting “Too Hip for the Room: Jung, Spinoza, and Escaping Our CyberPsychosis” at the Digitalization and Analytical Psychology Conference presented by the International Association for Jungian Studies (IAJS) and the International Association for Analytical Psychology (IAAP), held in-person at University College London from August 27th–29th. Additional presenters include Speaking of Jung guests Sonu Shamdasani, Susan Schwartz, Kevin Lu, and Fiann Paul.

Then on August 30th, Dr. Langan will be hosting a free, online public panel and Q&A for the Acid Horizon Research Commons. Does Psyche Matter? Jung and the Unconscious in 2026 will pose the question, Is depth psychology able to address the real crises of our world? He will be joined by panelist Gabriela Sova Spulirova, author and filmmaker JF Martel, and Dr. Christian McMillan of the University of Essex.

And finally, Dr. Langan will be teaching a class with the Acid Horizon Research Commons in October entitled Jung & Spinoza: God, Affect, Destiny. It will be held via Zoom on four Sundays in October from 11 AM until 1 PM EST. Readings will draw on Spinoza’s Ethics and Jung’s Collected Works (including “On the Nature of the Psyche,” “The Transcendent Function,” Symbols of Transformation, and Mysterium Coniunctionis), alongside Langan, Lloyd, and Storr.
