The realisation that insecurity is the natural state for humans, in fact, it’s healthy state, is paradoxical in today’s thinking – David Russell made this statement to the Melbourne Jung Society in a talk he gave in 2012.
David goes on to say that “Our desire for security and certainty, when we give into it, is deadly. We begin to live in an anaesthetised and soulless world, and no amount of super-technological wizardry and Internet manipulation can bring it back!”
It was Paul Eluard who wrote: “I understand another soul only by transforming my own, ‘as one transforms one’s hand by placing it in another’s.”
This evening’s talk will offer some further thoughts as to how this understanding relates to ‘personal growth’ and then, how this realisation might help us better orientate ourselves in the external and inner worlds.
David’s orientation in preparing tonight’s talk has been to stay with the mythopoetic tradition focusing on myth, poetic imagery and story rather than the philosophical. David believes these expressions best sum up what he calls “The Jungian Project.” He will be referencing Rilke, as well as Rumi’s poetry, and the mythic theme of Inanna’s descent.
