Our siblings can be a source of joy and suffering: often they are both. This workshop will explore what is helpful in our individuation journey when it comes to relating to our siblings as adults. We will use Jung’s theories of complex and archetype to delve into the many different dimensions of sibling relationships.
We often hear people use the phrase ‘like a sister or a brother to me’ to describe our dearest friends. A sibling can be a special companion who knows and accepts us we truly are. But for others, adult siblings are a source of anguish, anger, or animosity. Jealousy and competition lurk in every interaction. Somewhere in the mysterious mixture of positive and negative feelings we have about our siblings is our individual task of exploring our own shadow. We grow up grow wiser, and reach towards wholeness.
This workshop will include lecture, film clips, personal reflection and small and large group discussions. We we will also consider implications for transference in the therapeutic relationship. Together we will look at the ongoing impact of being a sibling as we journey through adulthood.
