Recent advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have led to it being regarded as something like a supernatural force with the power to save or destroy mankind. Are we right to be in such awe of AI? Or is this another example of what Jung called a ‘psychic epidemic’, a potentially dangerous stirring in the collective unconscious that shows how cut off fr om genuine spirit we have become. ‘Instead of being at the mercy of wild beasts, earthquakes, landslides and inundations’, he wrote in The Development of Personality (1934), ‘modern man is battered by the elemental forces of his own psyche’.
