Please join local combat veteran and psychotherapist, Adam Magers, MA, LPC for an exploration of the Odyssey through the lens of Jungian theory, while considering its meaning for returning veterans and those who support them. In Adam’s book, “Odysseus & the Oar: Healing After War and Military Service” he uncovers an archetypal pattern which he refers to as “the archetype of the warrior’s return.”
The symbols and themes that appear in the Odyssey are mirrored by those of other ancient myths from around the world, and can also be found in the dreams of modern veterans. When this imagery is related to via Jung’s theories, we are left with a broader, and more meaningful understanding of the challenges that veterans face. Ultimately, these insights challenge dominant treatment approaches used to support veterans, while helping us appreciate the need for broader approaches that tend to the whole person.
During our time together, we’ll dive into breakout groups to explore some examples of myths that include the archetype of the warrior’s return, while drawing out its meaning. Adam will also share about how the lesson’s we’ll learn together can be used to support modern veterans, and how a local non-profit called The Battle Within uses depth-oriented therapeutic programs to help them navigate the inevitable hardships of the transformation and recovery process.
