Refining the Heart through I Ching: The Knowledge of the Heart and Analytical Psychology in the Age of AI
The organising committee cordially invites you to the 11th International Conference of Analytical Psychology and Chinese Culture. This year, the gathering centers on a theme of profound contemporary relevance: “Refining the Heart through I Ching: The Knowledge of the Heart and Analytical Psychology in the Age of AI.”
In an era where the rapid ascent of Artificial Intelligence and technical rationalism is reshaping human cognition and social structures, we find ourselves at a critical crossroads. While technology advances, the collective psyche remains unsettled by global turbulence and fragmented social ties, leading us back to a fundamental, existential question: For one, wherein lies repose for the psyche? To address this, we look toward a wisdom that transcends algorithmic logic and speaks directly to the essence of humanity. “Refining the Heart through I Ching” (易以洗心) draws from the ancient Book of Changes, suggesting a purification of the psyche through the principles of transformation and constancy.
While AI excels at computation and logical deduction, it remains a stranger to the lived experience of the heart, moral intuition, and deep emotional resonance. This integration of ancient sagacity and contemporary clinical practice creates what we call “The Knowledge of the Heart”(心的知识)—a profound response to the crisis of meaning in the digital age. This path was one Carl Jung himself tirelessly pursued through the "method of the heart," an intuitive approach he identified as the "Chinese method" rooted in the I Ching.
This dialogue is further illuminated by the symbolism of "Brightness" (Ming), which in the I Ching is formed by the union of the sun and the moon. To “Refine the Heart and See into One's Nature” (Ming Xin Jian Xing) is to practice the rectification of the heart, as Mencius taught: "He who exhausts his heart knows his nature; knowing his nature, he knows Heaven." We are particularly honored to build this dialogue upon the legacy of Professor Liu Dajun, a venerable expert in I Ching studies who was recently named an Honorary Member of the IAAP at the 2025 Zurich Congress—a distinction held by only 19 scholars globally.
Our venue adds a sacred dimension to this intellectual exchange. Qufu, the "Sacred City of the East," served as the capital of the State of Lu during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods (c. 770–221 BC). It is home to the UNESCO World Heritage "San Kong" sites—the majestic Confucius Temple, the Mansion, and the Cemetery. We shall gather at Nishan, the birthplace of Confucius, where the doctrine of “reciprocity” (Shu) offers a timely blueprint for a community with a shared future for mankind.
With the utmost sincerity, we welcome you to join us in Nishan as a speaker to share your insights on theoretical research, clinical development, or professional philosophy. Should you wish to present, we kindly invite you to submit a title aligned with our core themes, so that we may ensure your contribution is beautifully presented.
We look forward to welcoming you to the hallowed lands of Nishan for this historic Conference, where ancient wisdom meets the future of the human psyche.
