Maintaining Integrity In The Analytic Process

While Jungian analysis focuses on understanding the persona, including identifying and working through one’s complexes, its larger goal is individuation, the recognition of the individual nature of oneself vs an identification with a collective psychology. Inherent in this process is the recognition of the ego-Self axis, and the role of integrity, which is required in order for the ego to develop a relationship with the Self. In this talk, we will examine theories of the ego-Self axis as described by Neumann and Edinger, including the factors that support and hinder the development of integrity in the context of analysis.

Learning objectives:

  • Describe what is meant by the Self and the ego-Self axis and its diagnostic relevance in the context of analysis.
  • Give an example from clinical practice of factors that support versus hinder the development of integrity and why this is relevant to analytic practice.
