There is a deep wound in each of us that plays itself out in our relationships. Carl Jung already observed that the feminine was rejected. Driven mad by a masculine-dominated world. He meant the feminine within all of us, and the masculine within all of us. This course aims to provide a myth to heal this wounded feminine, and restore a healthy masculine.
This wound runs deeper than politics, deeper than economics, deeper than the culture wars, though it expresses itself in all of them. The tearing we are living through is not new. It began with a myth most of us have never heard. This course is the map back. A path to reconnect with that original story and move toward a new vision of the masculine and feminine: the sacred marriage Jung held up as the ultimate goal of individuation.
Over four sessions, we follow a single arc that traces the inner journey women and men must take. It begins by seeing the other sex as alien and different. We then take on the difficult task of withdrawing our projections from them. Next, we arrive at the terrifying place of dissolution, where any real connection seems totally hopeless. Finally, we find we have made a place inside ourselves for the inner man or woman to find refuge, belonging, and love: the only way to participate in the sacred marriage described in Jung’s alchemical psychology.
Our vehicle for uncovering this journey is mythology; what Joseph Campbell called the public dream. These myths are the stories running silently in the background of every relationship, every organization, and every political moment we live through right now.
But beyond the structure, what Rebecca Armstrong wants to offer is something harder to name. Namely a way of seeing. She provides us with a vocabulary for what is happening in our relationships, in our professional life and in the civilization around us. Her mythological map shows where we are, how far we’ve come, and why this moment holds genuine possibility.
