Every aspect of earthly life is ruled in some way by number. It is so ingrained into our psyche that we pay little attention to its qualities, its mysteries. The ancients believed that number was the teacher about things otherwise inaccessible and unrecognizable. The I-Ching uses number because ‘the language of communication with suprahuman intelligences was believed to be based on “number”.
C. G. Jung has written that number is the archetype of order which has become conscious. He wrote that it may well be the most primitive element of order in the human mind and is sacred. We will explore this archetype giving special attention to the numbers 9, 13, 18, 32, 40, their use in dreams, fairy tales, in myth and in life. We will also discuss the mysterious number 137 and its meaning.
