Overview

David Tacey’s exploration of Jung’s psychology, begun in the 2021 series, continues in 2022. Last year he gave a series called ‘Jung and Spirituality’, and this year, 2022, he offers a series focusing on Jung’s major work, Modern Man in Search of a Soul. This classic, published in 1933, is a wide-ranging anthology of Jung’s writings, with an emphasis on the interpretation of dreams, therapy, literature, types, observations on the relationship between ‘archaic man’ and ‘modern man’, and his differences from Sigmund Freud. In each of these essays, Jung’s focus is on the psyche in a clinical context, as well as in a broader cultural context.

The course will consist of an opening Friday night lecture, followed by 5 online seminars, and there will be scope for questions and responses. The advantage of using Modern Man in Search of a Soul as the core text is that it was the first accessible presentation of Jung’s ideas expressed with unusual clarity in the master’s own words. The essays were originally delivered as public lectures, which is why they are so accessible.

The book is widely available at affordable prices, online and in stores. There is no obligation to read the book, but it is an option for those who wish to devote time to it.
