Who was this friend and close collaborator of C.G. Jung, long an important figure at Eranos? Despite their 30-year age difference, Neumann was an independent thinker who was able to challenge the elder Jung while deepening both their understandings of analytical psychology. His history takes us from Berlin to early Palestine just before World War II. We will look at a series of his drawings that describe his psychological struggle with this move during that tragic period in his story.
Saturday Workshop: Why is Erich Neumann So Important in the Development of Analytical Psychology?

Depth psychology is greatly indebted to the work of Erich Neumann. We will examine some of the vast field of interests that he explored throughout his lifetime and about which he wrote so eloquently and clearly. These interests include the development of consciousness, mythology, a new ethic, the feminine, the nature of creativity, mysticism, art, the child, and the roots of Judaism. It was Erich Neumann who developed the concept of the ego-Self axis.
We will discuss a number of these subject areas and observe how thoughtfully, with depth and passion, he presents his ideas and personal experiences and how valuable they truly are to our understanding of analytical psychology. His work is a deep well that we can revisit to nourish the creative foundation of our own work as therapists and as humans.
