One of the principle projects of depth psychology has always been the relativization of subjective consciousness, commonly known as the ego. From its origins, the inventors of depth psychology, Freud and Jung, have seen language as a carrier of the unconscious, providing us with a way to ascertain its contents. Our problem, they would both point out, is our sense of certainty that words are tools for our use to convey our meaning – despite our certainty, the unconscious maintains the priority of its voice. Through exploring how the Western mind has wrestled with this dilemma through poetry, philosophy, and depth psychology, we may discover a larger framework for the uncertainty in contemporary life.
