The Last Resort: A Novel Discussion

In this course, Kay Tobler Liss will present a program based on her recent novel “The Last Resort.”  The novel’s main theme explores our connection to nature and a secondary theme concerns social and environmental justice for a Native American tribe.  The story traces the journey of a Manhattan lawyer seeking a different life who ends up living near the ocean where he meets a Native American woman who becomes his spiritual guide.

The novel covers and includes topics such as the mythic hero’s journey; the four ancient elements as actual characters and symbols of transformation; the power of dreams to aid in self-actualization; active imagination through writing; Native American wisdom versus Christian beliefs; and how the philosophies of Fredrick Nietzsche, Martin Heidegger, Thomas Berry, and Henry David Thoreau are woven into the story to reflect the hero’s path of individuation and integration.
