Jung informs us that dreams are the essential means of access to the unconscious. At the same time, paradoxically, he would tell himself, upon hearing a dream, “I have no idea what this dream means.” [CW VIII. Par. 533.] In working with dreams, the need for absolute certainty shifts, the discovery of something that was, until just a moment ago, unknown, suddenly has changed things. “Working with Dreams” introduces theory, makes theory hypothesis, and accepts ambiguity. We consider:
1. APPROACHES. There are effective tools that may be used to take apart a dream, proven questions, hypothetical structure, and regard for types of dreams. It is possible to make headway and leave what is unknown for later analysis.
2. SYMBOLS. Just as words draw upon commonly accepted meaning, so may images in dream form. In this workshop we look at some of these hypothetically as a means (directly or by way of error) to unearth the personal significance of the motif of a dream.
3. INTERPRETATION. Things may speak for themselves in a way that answers a question as it is asked. Often the result is unexpected: what at first was felt to be a nightmare proves to be suggestive of hopeful transformation. We will address context, and the role of dreams in a dream series. I will share some observations, readings, and life experience.
