When writing of Chinese culture Jung is best known for his appraisal of The Secret of the Golden Flower and the I Ching, so consequently his enthusiasm for the concept of wu wei is often overlooked. However, from personal experience of working in China for over a decade and after a long life of making a great many mistakes, it seems to me that wu wei is the key to the individuation process. Furthermore, a similar notion is found in the work of Meister Eckhart, the C13th mystic, whose work the youthful Jung described as a breath of fresh air, compared to all the other worthy tomes in his father’s library, even though he said he didn’t understand a word of it. I’m inclined to feel the same way at times!
