Film – Return of Gaia

‘Gaia,’ who was once the Mother Goddess Earth in Ancient Greece, has come back into our consciousness through the physicist James Lovelock’s ‘Gaia Hypothesis’, which proposed that Earth was a self-regulating system – that is, a Living Being. The film traces – through art, poetry, and the changing philosophies of the human relation to our Earth – how the instinctive union with all life gradually diminished over the centuries – culminating in the so-called ‘Age of Enlightenment’ when the human mind defined itself as superior to the source of its being. In response to this, William Blake and other Romantic poets, Physicists such as Einstein and Bohm, Visionaries like Thomas Berry, and Ecologists everywhere, among many others, have all contributed to Gaia’s return to the sacred dimension which the Ancient Greeks understood, and which we, in our time, are asked to remember in ourselves: ‘To a Man of Imagination, Nature is Imagination itself,’ Blake says.
