Whenever experience goes beyond the limits of conventional understanding, and the power of an object is such that words fail, we find ourselves in the area of the numinous. The numinous marks the limits of reason, together with a sense of what might lie beyond those limits. Jung saw numinous events and our approach to them as fundamental for transformative change. This seminar will explore the concept and experience of the numinous in Jungian thought. It will examine its role in Jung’s notion of individuation as this has been elucidated through the Red Book, and will consider the clinical implications of such experiences.
