Individuation sits at the heart of Jungian thought. But do contemporary analysts still share Jung’s original vision of what it means and where it leads? And can a concept so deeply rooted in Western, Anglo-Eurocentric traditions speak meaningfully to the complexities of today’s world? In this talk, Giorgio Tricarico will take on the uncomfortable questions: Why, if individuation is an “innate tendency,” did Jung imagine it as an endeavour for the few? How do privilege, coloniality, and individualism shape the very framework we use to think about the self? Rather than offering easy answers, the talk invites us to sit with the friction — and to ask whether individuation, honestly interrogated, can still hold its ground in the current Zeitgeist.
Bio:
Giorgio Tricarico is a psychologist, psychotherapist, and Jungian analyst based in Helsinki, Finland. A member of the IAAP (International Association for Analytical Psychology), he is also one of the founders of FEGAP (Finnish Estonian Group for Analytical Psychology), where he serves as lecturer, supervisor, and current President. He has worked with adult patients since 1998. Alongside his clinical practice, he pursues independent research on pornography and ethical non-monogamy (ENM), and lectures internationally on contemporary themes in Analytical Psychology. He is the author of The Labyrinth of Possibility: A Therapeutic Factor in Analytical Practice (Routledge, 2015) and Lost Goddesses: A Kaleidoscope on Porn (2018), and editor of the collective volume Contemporary Voices on Individuation: C.G. Jung’s Legacy for the Modern World (Routledge, 2025).’.
