The Book of Kells is one of the finest and best known illuminated medieval manuscripts and contains the text of the four Gospels. We will examine some of its elaborate iconography and intricate decoration to discern the symbolic meanings of the Christian idiom in the ninth and tenth centuries. We will explore affinities with Jung’s Red Book which he also devised as an illuminated manuscript. How are these two books in dialogue with each other?
