Film Night: Dennis Slattery’s Mythic Imagination

From asking what is myth, Dr Slattery responds: Myth is what allows us to stand up in a strong wind. Myths give us support and give us a flexibility rather than a fixation. A person without a myth is a person without a home. When we live a mythless life, we live an orphaned life. Myths ground us in place. In this film, Dr Slattery discusses what is it behind the mythical images and narratives that finds its way into our present life: in movies, advertisements, and literature. And what is happening psychologically when a particular story or image grips us to our very core. And how does that activation reveal an archetypal reservoir that feeds the story. Dr Slattery’s theories challenge us to muse on the narrative plots in our life, to uncover the invisible presences that inform and shape our personal myth.
