Narcissism can propel the process of individuation. Often, with Narcissus as a guide, we are driven by what Jung called the archetype of the puer or puella and its attendant ‘as-if’ personality. The ‘as-if’ personality is characterized by feelings of fraudulence and vulnerability, surrounded by a wall of impenetrability. The person feels like an imposter and is driven by how they appear to others. Although this persona can be appealing, the façade of illusion and superficiality indicate an imagination prone to dissociation, and a feeling of alienation from one’s self. Reality is fraught with anguish, panic, absence and void. Come discover how the myth of Narcissus poignantly illustrates the struggle for this type of person to connect to self and to other.
