Our world is being torn apart by tremendous oppositional forces, be they political, social, financial, or environmental. Opposites abound accompanied by fears of increasing polarization and disintegration. Jung’s view of psyche is rooted in an appreciation of opposites and the roles they play in life. Jung found that creatively embracing life’s ‘inexplicable and paradoxical’ nature leads to wholeness and a more soulful connection to the world. In this presentation I explore Jung’s work on understanding the paradoxical nature of opposites and how we can apply this understanding to living in balance with ourselves and the world around us. To do so requires us to engage with transrational ways of knowing. I consider various dimensions of ‘extraordinary’ knowing that influenced Jung’s view of psyche and our relationship with the world. I describe how synchronicity creatively complements a purely rational worldview placing us in service to the paradoxical.
