An autobiographical monologue based on Josh’s experiences studying dementia at the University of California, San Francisco while, at the same time, his stepfather was suffering from Alzheimer’s and newly elected President Donald Trump was leading the country into what Josh came to see as a kind of political dementia. A key finding by neuroscientists treating patients with Frontotemporal Dementia — the discovery of an “empathy circuit” in the brain — inspired, in Josh, a hopeful concept: the possibility of linking individuals’ empathy circuits into a collective one, perhaps even sparking a revolution of empathy.
