MJA Class: “Portraits in Pathology”

Given that “psychopathology” translates as “the expression of the suffering of the soul,” what are the generative forces that produce pathology? What are some examples of common pathologic states? What are our reflexive protections against pathology? What are the challenges of living in a pathogenic world, and with a pathologized soul? We will analyze three “cases” drawn from modern literature, and then examine our own anxiety management systems.

CEU Objectives:

1. Reappraise psychopathology from a depth psychological perspective, one that moves beyond DSM description.

2. See how the study of the arts, literature, history can help the therapist grasp timeless, archetypal patterns showing up in current clinical settings.

3. Analyze three “cases” drawn from the field of literature, each illustrating psychopathic features.

4. Explore the major adaptive patterns humans employ to deal with anxiety.

5. Discern the “psycho-logic” of psychopathology in order to find better modes of adaptation with better possible outcomes.
