As a sentimental longing for the past, nostalgia is certainly a universal experience – almost every language has a word for it. While nostalgia is often associated with homesickness, Jung noted that there is also another side to nostalgia. Like the Roman god Janus, who looks in two directions at once, nostalgia’s longing for the past also includes a prospective dimension, one that looks to the future. Looking back can enable us to move forward and, in this sense, nostalgia can be a valuable psychological resource.
