Jung cautioned against Westerners taking up Eastern spiritual practices; writing of yoga he said “[the westerner] will infallibly make a wrong use of yoga because his psychic disposition is quite different from that of the Oriental.” (CW11 §868) With a proliferation of meditation practices available on line, in groups and retreats, Stephen will explore how Jung’s psychology can helpfully support meditation practice, arguing that psychological scrutiny and meditative insight together can lead to self-knowledge and not simply to imitation (as Jung suggests). The talk will explore similarities and differences between the psychology of Jung and early Buddhist ideas that underpin and support meditation practice.
