Robert Mitchell will discuss his latest book “Teacher: Seeking the Vocational Archetype.” This book is a picture of Mitchell’s process of seeking the vocational archetype of the teacher during the first 15 years of his teaching career. Descriptive stories of his experiences with his students are a major part of illuminating that process. The other part was to find and defend a philosophy of education that worked in the autonomy of the classroom and evoked the teacher archetype in front of his students, their parents, and the administration. Autonomy in the classroom, built on trust and respect from students, their parents, and the school community’s leadership, gives the teacher’s archetype a strong voice in that community. This talk will inspire, encourage, and empower teachers seeking the vocational archetype in themselves and giving voice to the vocational archetype in school communities and culture.
