The Frog Prince Disenchanted: Moving from Complex to Individuation

The Frog Prince is a beloved fairytale which appears to have a very simple moral message for young women: “Keep your promises, obey your parents, and you will be rewarded.” But is this conventional moral interpretation always the most healthy for a woman? And what of the Frog Prince who experiences the Princess’s disgust and yet chooses to marry her? How does this match represent a healthy, intimate relationship… Or does it? Drawing on Jungian and other analytic interpretations, we will examine two real-life case examples, and take a more subtle look at the archetypal masculine and feminine patterns that orient and disorient so many romantic relationships.
