The Shadow & The Problem of Evil

The question of evil occupies collective consciousness tremendously throughout our world today. Stories of violence fill the news – acts of terrorism, wars of various kinds and sizes, criminality. In this climate, it is rare to see evidence of good in the world. Does this signify an extraordinary eruption of evil in the world? Or does it signify a heightened awareness of shadow, due to mass media coverage, that has always been present and active in the world
but unseen? Is it reality or projection? Psychologically speaking, we need to distinguish between the projection of unconscious figures, symbols, and processes (the shadow) on the one hand, and the reality of evil active in the world on the other. How do we distinguish the one from the other? And how can we diminish the effect of projections that interfere with our grasp of reality and exacerbate the problem of evil?
