Together – apart in touch in a time of separation

In this talk I explore the impact of separation and distance on our work as analysts and psychotherapists. Isolation has intensified the importance of being connected, and has highlighted the need for new ways of working in a virtual world. How do we engage with unconscious communication in the absence of physical presence? Does technology impede or enhance the experience? In the absence of physical presence, without the familiar temenos of the consulting room containing the analytic couple, we have had to adapt an alternative array of senses. I reflect on the impact this has had on the space between self and other when we are linked only via screens. Finally, I want to put this into a global context as the forces of the natural world are reminding us so powerfully of our place on the planet. Is there significance and meaning to be found amid these clinical challenges?
